What is Elevess?
Elevess is a brand of dermal filler made by Anika Therapeutics. It contains hyaluronic acid (HA) which naturally occurs in the body. This filler can help correct soft tissue contour imperfections including wrinkles, folds and acne scarring. In the EU, Elevess is also approved for improving the appearance of lips.
Does Elevess hurt?
Being an injectable, Elevess does require insertion of an injection into your skin. The product is in the form of a gel, which is injected through a tiny 30g needle. The gel is easy to inject and the needle is very thin. Additionally, the filler also contains anesthetic lidocaine, which eases some of the discomfort during and after the injection.
For alleviating pain prior to the injection, your cosmetic surgeon may use a topical anesthetic or even apply ice to the area. This helps numb the treatment area prior to insertion of the needle. After your treatment, you will experience minor swelling and/or redness. It should not cause you undue pain or restriction of movement. If you experience significant pain or allergy after Elevess injections, contact your doctor immediately.
How Long Does Elevess Last?
According to the manufacturer, Elevess injectables can provide long lasting results due to their patented HA cross-linker and the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid than any other dermal filler available in today’s market. This is because cross-linked HA breaks down a lot more slowly than free HA, providing a product which can last longer than collagen-based fillers. A clinical study conducted in the EU suggests that a significant percentage of patients continue to see results for up to one year after Elevess injections.
Do Elevess Dermal Fillers Look Natural?
After injection of Elevess, the body takes six months to one year to reabsorb the ha-based filler. This enables gradual and natural loss of volume over a lengthier period of time, rather than a sudden change in your skin and facial contour.
Does Elevess Help with Skin Hydration?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body to assist the structure of the skin and help with tissue repair. It also acts as a lubricant for cartilage and other tissue. In the skin, HA has the ability to absorb large quantities of water and to form complexes with collagen and elastin (which support the skin’s structure and facilitate elasticity and volume). As a polymer HA is continually being produced, however as time and sun damage affects our bodies, production of this key ingredient deteriorates naturally over time. HA based-fillers help reintroduce this acid back into the skin and thereby helping with hydration and in effect folds and wrinkles.
Do I Need an Allergy Test for Elevess?
No. Unlike other dermal fillers, Elevess injections do not require a skin test prior to injection. This is because the base ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is already naturally occurring in the body. This is why Elevess also has minimal risks other than redness and swelling. Other fillers which are made of foreign material such as bovine can cause an allergic reaction and therefore require a prior allergy test. However, there have been reports of Elevess causing allergic reactions so before you decide to get Elevess injections make sure you ask your doctor about all the possible complications and risks and whether you are a good candidate.
What Can Elevess Injections Treat?
The Elevess product is approved for different treatments in a number of locations such as the US, EU, Canada, Chile and Peru. In most, Elevess is permitted for correcting facial lines and wrinkles. This includes crow’s feet, nasolabial folds (the folds between your nose and the corners of your mouth), wrinkles around your mouth (also known as smoker’s lines) and forehead lines. In some localities, the injectables can also be used for lip enhancement. Ask your cosmetic physician what the approved cosmetic benefits are in your particular location.

How to Find the Best Elevess Doctor/Specialist
Elevess is a cosmetic treatment which should be administered by a qualified doctor or cosmetic surgeon specializing in injectable and facial contouring. Some cosmetic surgeons allow their nursing staff to carry out the injections. If you can, try to have an MD administer the treatment. When searching for an Elevess specialist, make sure you research their qualifications, credentials, training and experience. Being board certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery does not indicate that a doctor is trained and experienced in this treatment.
Be sure to ask your doctor which procedures they specialize in, where they trained and how many treatments they’ve performed. Obtain lots of before and after photos of patients they’ve treated for the same area using this product.
Even if a doctor has the right credentials, this does not mean they will be good at injecting Elevess. Apart from researching their formal qualifications and training, try to find customer reviews to see the overall satisfaction rate of your potential doctor. Independent recommendations are invaluable for assessing the best doctor or surgeon who is most experienced in the treatment. Don’t be tempted to opt for the cheapest cost without considering the above factors. A cheap center may not offer the experience you desire. Also, you may wish to consider whether you feel more comfortable with a female or male physician.
