Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Gynecomastia (also known as Male Breast Reduction) is a cosmetic surgery procedure to reduce the size of male breasts or man boobs. Men’s breasts are enlarged by the abnormal development of their mammary glands. Whilst it largely develops in overweight men, the cause is most often undetermined.

Gynecomastia Surgery Options

The technique used for male breast reduction depends on your body tissue. A small incision is made just below your nipple. Excess glandular tissue is cut away. If you only have excess fat, the surgeon may just use ultra-sound guide liposuction instead of cutting tissue. The surgeon may also place a fat flap under your areola to stop it from sticking to your pectoral muscles. The wound is then closed with stitches.

If only small corrections are required, this may be performed under local anaesthetic in the surgeon’s clinic. More extensive surgery may need to be performed under general anaesthetic.

Gynecomastia Recovery

After the operation, the surgeon will tape your chest. You will need to keep your chest taped and you will be required to wear a pressure garment to ensure the skin is kept firmly in place. You will have a drain attached however this is removed before you go home. You need to remain at the facility for at least a couple of hours. When you get home you must have bed rest. Your chest will be sensitive. However, if you experience pain, swelling or a fever, you need to contact your surgeon immediately.

Approximately one week after male breast reduction, the stitches and tape are removed. You must continue to wear the pressure garment for approximately 6 weeks. You need to keep your chest out of the sun for at least 6 months and use a broad spectrum sunscreen. The sunlight could permanently change your chest skin pigmentation.

Gynecomastia Risks

Some of the risks associated with male breast reduction include bleeding , infection and loss of sensation in your nipple. Although the loss of sensitivity is usually temporary, it can be permanent. You may also develop a ridge around the treated area however this usually disappears within a year. You will have scarring around your areola but this will fade.
