It helps to alleviate blotchy or unevenly pigmented skin. The cosmetic surgeon can even target specific areas such as fine wrinkles, superficial pigmentation or acne scarring. Blackheads and whiteheads can also be treated using microdermabrasion.
How does it work? An exfoliating probe is used to blow fine crystals at the surface layer of your skin. Commonly aluminium oxide (diamond-shaped crystals) is used; however microdermabrasion can also be performed using baking soda, salt and even corn cob granules. Whilst blasting, the probe also vacuums the used up particles and dead skin cells.
The whole process takes about half an hour. It’s a relatively cost effective walk-in walk-out procedure. However, you will most likely need multiple sessions to see the benefit. The procedure cannot alleviate deeper wrinkles.
Microdermabrasion has numerous advantages. Some of these include:
- Stimulates new cells and collagen formation
- Suitable for all skin types
- Smooths out surface irregularities
- Little downtime (if any)
- Your skin acquires a healthy glow
- No anaesthetic or sedation required
- Acne scars and crow’s feet can be targeted and softened over time
- Relatively low risk procedure
After the procedure, your face will be red and itchy. Since your skin is exposed to abrasion, the redness will remain for several hours following treatment. Generally, your skin returns to normal within 24 hours.
The treatment is relatively safe. One risk is breakage of the skin. If the skin breaks then you need to take action to protect it with Vaseline or some other barrier ointment. However, the redness will remain for three to four weeks. You will not be able to cover the skin with makeup at first. After 10 days, you can use hypoallergenic makeup. Breaking the skin is quite rare if the procedure is done properly.
